The Haddon's Carpet Anemone is a solitary creature commonly found in shallow waters of the Indo Pacific and Red Sea. It prefers to reside in soft muddy or sandy substrate and can reach up to 3 feet in diameter. This anemone, also known as Haddon's Anemone, Saddle Anemone, Saddle Carpet Anemone, or Saddleback Anemone, can be distinguished from similar species by its lack of coloration or markings on its underside and column. In its natural habitat, it serves as a "host" for various species of Clownfish, such as those from the Amphiprion genus. When kept in captivity, it has been observed to host Amphiprion ocellaris, A. percula, and A. allardi.
The Haddon's Carpet Anemone requires a tank with strong lighting and good water movement. A variety of sandy and rocky locations should be provided in the aquarium as this species of Carpet Anemone is known to move about and seek refuge. To ensure the anemone feels secure, it is recommended to bury its foot in the sandy bottom or attach itself to the aquarium glass. When introducing this anemone to the tank, it is best to dig out an area in the sand bed for it to reside and decrease the flow rate to prevent it from being blown around. This will allow the anemone to comfortably settle in and bury its foot in the sand bed. Once settled, carefully move some sandy substrate around the column and increase the flow rate back to normal.
The Green Carpet Anemone, or Stichodactyla Gigantea, possesses a powerful sting that can harm nearby corals and anemones within a 12" radius. When adding it to an aquarium, close monitoring of its movements is crucial. When kept with other fish aside from clownfish, extra caution must be exercised as this anemone is known to consume fish. Its adhesive properties make it challenging to remove from surfaces without causing damage, and it is one of the few anemones that can cause severe reactions in humans. Proper handling is essential when caring for this species.
