The Yellow Clown Goby, with its lively demeanor and bright hue, makes a delightful addition to any marine aquarium. Often found perched on live rock or coral, this active and tranquil species is a popular sight for hobbyists to behold. Despite its small size of only 1-1/2", the Yellow Clown Goby's stout figure and large head exude a subtle yet authoritative aura within the home aquarium.
Native to the Indo-Pacific reefs, Gobiodon okinawae often gathers around both soft and hard coral colonies. Due to its peaceful nature, the Yellow Clown Goby is a great choice for any reef aquarium that has polyp corals. This member of the Gobiidae family will swim and perch among the polyps, but care should be taken with SPS corals as it may nip at smaller polyps.
For optimal care, house individual Clown Gobies in a 10 gallon or larger tank, ideally with branching corals to replicate their natural environment. These gobies typically do not exhibit aggression towards other fish, although they may fight amongst themselves in smaller tanks. As a result, it is recommended to keep them with other peaceful species.
The Yellow Clown Goby is known to reproduce in aquariums. Care must be taken if the aquarium has Acropora sp. or similar SPS corals. The female will lay eggs under the coral branches, leading to tissue recession. However, the coral can regenerate under favorable circumstances. To maintain proper health, the Yellow Clown Goby requires a diverse diet including brine shrimp, frozen mysis shrimp, table shrimp, and frozen food for carnivores.
