The Ultra Green Star Polyp Colony, known scientifically as Pachyclavularia violacea, is a popular beginner-friendly coral species. Once properly acclimated and established in an aquarium, these corals are highly resilient and have a rapid growth rate, quickly covering their surroundings. They have an encrusting growth pattern, meaning they will grow on most surfaces such as glass or rocks. With a variety of color variations available, these corals thrive in a wide range of conditions.
Their peaceful nature is complemented by their ability to retract or deflate individual polyps in response to potential predators. While they do not harm other corals in close proximity, they are vulnerable to damage from more aggressive species in a reef aquarium. To maintain their health, it is important to provide them with medium to high light levels and strong water movement, as well as supplementing with iodine and other trace elements in the water.
This species has zooxanthellae, a symbiotic algae, within their bodies. Through photosynthesis, they obtain most of their nutrients from this relationship. To supplement their diet, weekly feedings of micro-plankton or filter feeding invertebrate food are beneficial. The Green Star Polyps are easily propagated by taking a cutting from their encrusting base and attaching it to a solid surface, such as a rock or a frag plug.
