The shell of the Assorted Cone Snail (Conidae sp.) typically measures 5-10cm and has a heavy, conical shape with a flattened end, resembling an ice-cream cone. Some species may have pointed tips or an olive shape, and the shell opening is a narrow slit. The operculum, a small sliver of horn-like material, covers the opening. Certain species have colorful shell patterns, which may be concealed under a thick, hairy layer known as the periostracum. These slow-moving snails use their fast-acting venom to rapidly immobilize and kill prey. Their modified radula, or feeding structure, is shaped like a hollow tooth and is used to shoot out like a harpoon, injecting a potent toxin into their prey. The harpoon, which remains embedded in the prey, is attached to the snail with a cord. Once the prey is paralyzed, the snail retracts the cord and consumes the prey.
